Continuing his working visit to Portugal, today Aigars Kalvītis, Prime Minister of the Republic of Latvia, met Jorge Fernando Branco de Sampaio, President of Portugal. Aigars Kalvītis expressed satisfaction with the active political relations that have developed between both countries. The political dialogue is characterized by the exchange of official visits of State Presidents, as well as the first-ever working visit of a Prime Minister of Latvia to Portugal. Jorge Fernando Branco de Sampaio and Aigars Kalvītis discussed Latvia’s impressions and feelings after accession to the European Union (EU). The President of Portugal was interested in economic development of Latvia. Both sides shared the view that it is important for all EU Member States that the European Parliament approves the new EU Financial Perspective for 2007-2013 as soon as possible. During the meeting, attention was paid to EU’s relations with its new neighbours and Russia, as well as possibilities for further progress of the EU Constitutional Treaty. The Prime Minister will return to Latvia on Friday, January 27.
