Today, November 28, Aigars Kalvītis, Prime Minister of the Republic of Latvia, arrived in Ukraine on an official visit and met Volodymyr Lytvyn, Speaker of the Verkhovna Rada (Parliament) of Ukraine. During the meeting, Aigars Kalvītis congratulated Ukraine on the first anniversary of the Orange Revolution. The Prime Minister highly valued the achievements of Ukraine during the last year and the work done by the Verkhovna Rada in strengthening democracy and promoting democratic reforms in the country. During the conversation, attention was paid to cooperation of Peoples Parties of both countries. The Prime Minister stressed that, in particular, the relations with the European Peoples Party and the European Parliament should be expanded. Aigars Kalvītis noted that active operation of the Parliament of Ukraine is necessary, which would lead to adoption of legislation promoting entrepreneurship. The Prime Minister expressed to Volodymyr Lytvyn condolences concerning the day of commemoration of the great Ukrainian famine (Holodomor) of 1932-1933, from which very many Ukrainians suffered. Continuing his visit, this afternoon, in the Latvian Embassy in Kiev, Aigars Kalvītis is meeting Latvian businessmen who are active in Ukraine to hear their opinion on the business environment and conditions in Ukraine. On Tuesday, November 29, the Prime Minister will meet the President of Ukraine, Prime Minister, Minister for Foreign Affairs, as well as the Mayor of Kiev. During the visit, the Prime Minister will also visit Simferopol, Sevastopol and meet the Governor of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea.
