Today, October 27, Aigars KalvÄ«tis, Prime Minister of the Republic of Latvia, received a letter from Condolezza Rice, Secretary of State of the United States of America (US), in which she expresses the deep gratefulness of the US for LatviaâÀ™s dedicated participation as a coalition partner in Iraq. The State Secretary notes that the presence of LatviaâÀ™s soldiers will be essential in ensuring new democratic institutions have the chance to succeed and preventing Iraq from becoming a safe haven for Islamic extremists. Condolezza Rice thanks the soldiers of Latvia and other coalition partners for ensuring that over nine million Iraqis were able to vote on October 15 in IraqâÀ™s constitutional referendum, in which they voted in favor of democracy. The next step will be elections in December. The State Secretary stresses that the presence of LatviaâÀ™s peacekeepers remains vitally important in order to help Iraq sustain its democratic momentum, and that the coalition partners must succeed in the fight for freedom. Condolezza Rice thanks Latvia for its steadfast commitment to achieving a lasting peace in Iraq.
