Today, October 27, Aigars Kalvītis, Prime Minister of the Republic of Latvia, participates in the informal meeting of heads of state and government of the European Union countries in Hampton, London. Aigars Kalvītis took part in the discussion as the first head of government from the new EU countries after the speeches of representatives of France, Germany, the Netherlands, Spain, Austria, United Kingdom and Sweden. The Prime Minister stressed that the EU must think about a liberal and open trade policy. The main focus should be on increasing the competitiveness of the economies of EU Member States in the world. Aigars Kalvītis noted that EU Member States and institutions are paying too much attention to assessing the internal situation of the EU, while at the same time insufficiently assessing the competitiveness of the EU in comparison to other economic powers of the world. The Prime Minister addressed the issue of social models, noting that there neither is nor will be in the near future a common social model. The Prime Minister said that the developed national models should be maintained and their successful operation should be ensured. Social models and social guarantees of various countries should be analysed, and the best solutions should be taken over. In his speech, the Prime Minister underlined the responsibility of governments of the Member States for decisions that need to be taken both at the national level and in EU legislation. These decisions must be taken on the basis of a competent and thorough analysis, not on the results of public opinion polls, which could provide false signals and sidetrack from dealing with future issues. At the same time, the society should receive an explanation about the importance of decisions taken by governments for the purpose of dynamic development and future growth of economies.
