Today, October 26, Aigars Kalvītis, Prime Minister of the Republic of Latvia, met Philip Wallace Griffiths, the new Ambassador of New Zealand to Latvia, who paid the Prime Minister an introductory visit.

Aigars Kalvītis congratulated the Ambassador on his new appointment and expressed hope that the relations of Latvia and New Zealand would continue developing and widening.

The Prime Minister noted with satisfaction the intensification of bilateral contacts and official visits of New ZealandâÀ™s officials to Latvia in the recent years. A significant step in developing closer relations was the granting of a visa-free regime for citizens of Latvia in April this year, which will certainly promote development of tourism.

During the meeting, bilateral relations of both countries and the new opportunities for cooperation in the field of economics, education, customs matters and tourism offered by LatviaâÀ™s membership of the European Union were discussed.

Aigars KalvÄ«tis expressed LatviaâÀ™s willingness to continue expanding the economic relations of both countries, mentioning as a practical step the start of cooperation and exchange of information with the New ZealandâÀ™s Economic and Trade Development Agency and Investment New Zealand.

The Prime Minister stressed LatviaâÀ™s interest in offering New Zealand its services in selling of New ZealandâÀ™s export goods in the European Union, European Free Trade Association (EFTA) and East-European countries.
