On Tuesday, July 19, Aigars Kalvītis, Prime Minister of the Republic of Latvia, met Wernfried Köffler, the new Ambassador of Austria to Latvia. During the meeting, the Prime Minister congratulated the Ambassador on the commencement of his work in Latvia and expressed confidence that in the future the relations of Latvia and Austria will remain just as good, dynamic and constructive. Aigars Kalvītis expressed hope that Wernfried Köffler will contribute towards closer and more diverse contacts between both countries. Both sides discussed the bilateral relations of Latvia and Austria and cooperation in economic issues, agriculture and culture, paying particular attention to topical issues of the European Union (EU): negotiations on the new EU Financial Perspective, the course of ratification of the EU Constitution and the upcoming European Council Presidency of Austria, which it will take over from the United Kingdom on January 1, 2006. Aigars Kalvītis wished Wernfried Köffler success in performing his work and expressed hope for successful cooperation.
