Previous year marked significant changes and challenges for Latvia. Gunta Veismane, Director of the State Chancellery, admits, this year our main concerns were Latvias performance within the European Union and NATO, economic management in view of the rising inflation and competitiveness in the large common market. In 2004, key lines of activity of the State Chancellery were reforming of public agencies, implementation of the strategic planning system, development of the salary system in public administration, development of the policy impact assessment system and representation of states interests in litigation. In 2005, it is planned to further work on development of ministerial strategic plans and operational strategy of the State Chancellery. Other focuses will be public administration reform, implementation of the human resources policy and alignment of the institutional system and frameworks. Another important task for Latvia as EU Member State is preparation of the National Development Plan. In order to improve public involvement, the State Chancellery plans to set up a Guest Centre and provide a newly designed homepage of the Cabinet of Ministers ensuring extensive, user-friendly and interactive information.
